Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Composer Wins First Ever Video Game Score Grammy Award
The Action-RPGAssassin’s Creed Valhallajust won the first-ever award for a video game score at the Grammys this year. While game music has won categories in previous award ceremonies, this is the first win for the brand new category “Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media”. The award went to Stephanie Economou who is the composer for the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC.
Other nominees in the category included Aliens: Fireteam Elite by Austin Wintory, Call of Duty: Vanguard by Bear McCreary, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy by Ricard Jacques and Christopher Tin for Old World. Tin is the only previous composer to win a Grammy for his score in Civilization 4.

While quite the industry veteran, Economou’s pieces found in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’sDLCs The Siege of Paris and Dawn of Ragnarok are the first for her as a video game composer. In an interview with billboard, Economou expressed how honoured she was to have won the award.
Dawn of Ragnarok was released last year, adding an Odin tale expansion following his journey to rescue his son Baldr. This was based on the dwarven realm of Svaralfheim. Players embark on the Norse-inspired journey infiltrating and taking over strongholds.

Video Game W
This isn’t the first time that video game music has graced and bore new categories in mainstream media awards. In 2021 the rogueliteHades won a Hugo award, an award ceremony which commemorates both science fiction and fantasy works. This was the first time the category was introduced, making the Greek-myth-inspired game its first winner.
It’s great to see more mainstream awards gaining the video game category as it spotlights these fantastic titles in a broader sense. AC will be going back to the franchise’s roots in the next major titleAssassin’s Creed Miragewhich releases in 2023. There is also quite the journey ahead withnew projects in the worksfor the franchise including codenames Red, Jade and Codename Hexe.
