Two years ago at the TCA Winter Tour, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo revealed the network gave the green light for a long-awaitedDeadwoodmovie, which would wrap up the hit series once and for all. Updates on this TV movie have been sparse ever since then, but during this year’s TCA Winter Tour, HBO president Casey Bloys indicated that production may finally begin this fall. Here’s what he had to say below.
“Assuming that we could get all the actors back together, I think [theDeadwood revival] is something we would do possibly next fall, fall 2018. I’m waiting for a rewrite, and we have to get the numbers right, but, assuming we can get everybody back together, I’m feeling optimistic about it.”
Ian McShanerevealed in June 2016 that he was ready to bring back his iconic characterAl Swearingen, but in December 2016, the actor revealed in another interview that this movie needs to happen soon, hinting that all of the actors were available then, but they may not be available in the future. Casey Bloys revealed that talks are currently under way with cast members that are centered on their availability, but no cast members have been confirmed quite yet. When asked if there were any talks to bring back any other beloved shows from HBO’s storied past, such asSix Feet UnderorThe Sopranos, Casey Bloys had this to say.
“There are no other discussions about bringing anything back. I don’t think there is any reason to dig upSix Feet Under, leave it where it is, it is great. OrThe Sopranos. We have so much coming, I’m excited about that and don’t feel the need (for reboots).”
We first heard about this potentialDeadwoodmovie back in 2015, whenseries creator David Milchentered negotiations with HBO about creating something that would give fans a definitive ending to the hit series, which only ran for three seasons before it was unceremoniously cancelled.
