Koei Tecmo has revealed an upcoming JRPG based on the popular manga and anime,Fairy Tail. We were fortunate enough to get some one on one time with the team behind the title, ask questions, and seeFairy Tale Gameplayfirst hand.
Fairy Tail Gameplay Impressions
Gust Studios are big fans of Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail, and thought that the combination of magic, dragons and cats could perfectly match a JRPG setting. They set out to produce a game that explored the events of the anime from the return from Tennoshima and toward the Great Magic Games competition. To keep fidelity to the max, Mashima sensei is supervising the title and is thus far reported to be positively impressed by the game.
Gameplay Preview
During our preview, we were explained the basics of gameplay - which is turn based and very familiar for JRPG players. You can customize the members of your party to adapt to each situation you anticipate to encounter, and perform their attacks that will have strengths and weaknesses against specific opponents. Winning battles restores a set amount of MP, so tactical thinking of party composition, attack order, and escalation of magic is important.
Quests and Exploration
Players begin by selecting a quest from the guild’s board - these start much as the anime with few simple objectives, and will become more numerous and challenging as the guild grows. Out in the field, players can pick up crafting materials that are then brought back to the guild for analysis and use for upgrading the guild’s capabilities. We could not see if there is item crafting, or equipment, but we did see several materials and would expect some sort of progression from gathering and defeating enemies in the field.
The combat looked fun and exciting, with characters performing the moves that we all know from the anime series - with the addition of a special gauge that enables a barrage attack by several members. This chain of magic attacks culminates in the more powerful and popular attacks from the main characters, so they’ll be something to look forward to when preparing your party.

Character Development
Further, players can develop deeper relationships with party members by interacting with them and completing their side missions. These extra objectives are said to be numerous (they could double your playtime!) and would deeply impact the way you enjoy the game as your party becomes truly your own.
World Size
It is not yet known how big the world will be, but there is a rather large map of Fiore that we expect will be filled out, and many NPC characters to enjoy meeting and interacting with.
Since this was the first showing to the press, there’s not much to say as a lot of the details of the content are yet to be revealed - we expect there will be a hands-on later in the year or early next year before release. We look forward to seeing it again and more in-depth to share all the details with you!

Fairy Tail game is set to release in 2020 on Playstation 4, Steam and Nintendo Switch. No word on Google Stadia yet but we’ll keep you updated!
