STX Films has revealed a brand new clip fromThe Gentlemen. This is the latest from writer/director Guy Ritchie, who has spent the past handful of years directing massive blockbusters, such asKing Arthur: Legend of the Swordand Disney’s live-actionAladdinremake. The latter of which went on to gross more than $1 billion at the global box office. Here, however, he’s scaled things back quite a bit for what looks to be a clever crime flick, which sees Matthew McConaughey as a big-time pot dealer looking to get out of the business.
The clip opens with Matthew McConaughey’s character standing in the middle of a green room filled with marijuana plants.Matthew McConaugheysays several names for weed, in perhaps the way only he can, before explaining that he sees selling weed as the new gold rush. It then gets into the heart of the matter, which sees him explaining that he wishes to sell his illegal marijuana empire, since it will become a legal business soon and, given his checkered past, he can’t possibly be the face of a legitimate company. So, he’s contemplating the benefits of retirement instead.
The Gentleman trailershowcased the tone, but this clip helps us get a better grip on the story and characters. This feels very much like classic Guy Ritchie, which is something we haven’t seen for several years. Perhaps not since 2008’sRocknRolla. That’s not to say that Ritchie’s style hasn’t been present in efforts likeSherlock HolmesandThe Man from U.N.C.L.E., but this feels like the kind of movie that he built his career on. Stylized. Original. A little rough around the edges, yet slick at the same time.
The Gentlemencenters on an American expat named Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) who managed to build a very lucrative marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to sell the business and leave the game, it sets off a chain of plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his empire out from under him. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Jeremy Strong (Succession), Eddie Marsan (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and Hugh Grant (Paddington 2).
STX could certainly use another hit, as they’ve had several major flops in 2019, such asUglyDolls,Pomsand, more recently,Playmobil: The Movie. They’re only certifiable, major hit this year wasHustlers, which grossed $150 million at the global box office and Jennifer Lopez secured a Golden Globes nomination for her role. Could Guy Ritchie’s return to movies likeLock, Stock and Two Smoking BarrelsandSnatchwith an A-list cast be that winning combination they need?
