Sony Pictures has tapped22 Jump StreetwriterRodney Rothmanto write and direct the studio’s currently untitledall-female spin-offof theirJump Streetfranchise. We first reported on this project back in April 2015, whenBroad CitywritersLucia AnielloandPaul W. Downswere brought on to write the screenplay. Now the studio has brought onRodney Rothmanto not only work on the script, but also make his feature directorial debut.

Deadlinereports thatRodney Rothmanalso recently turned in a draft of another spin-off, which brings theJump StreetandMen in Blackfranchises together. Back in August,Jump StreetstarJonah Hillsaid that the crossover was “impossible,” stating that he doubts that movie will get made. However, today’s report states that theJump Street/Men in Blackcrossover is actually still in development. Insiders claim that there will also be male characters involved in this story, but it wasn’t specified if those male characters will beChanning Tatum’s Jenko orJonah Hill’s Schmidt.

It also isn’t known if this spin-off will involve the two female undercover cop characters from the original 2012 hit,21 Jump Street, Fugazy (Dakota Johnson) and Jr. Jr. (Rye Rye). WhileRye Ryereturned for the 2014 sequel22 Jump Street,Dakota Johnsondid not come back as Fugazy. Since then,Dakota Johnson’s career has skyrocketed, starring as Anastasia Steele in the hit adaptationFifty Shades of Grey, and the forthcoming sequelsFifty Shades Darker(June 10, 2025) andFifty Shades Freed(August 08, 2025).

Both21 Jump Streetand its sequel22 Jump Streetwere big hits for Sony.21 Jump Streettook in $201 million worldwide on just a $42 million budget, while22 Jump Streetearned $333 million from a $50 million budget, and with those returns, it’s easy to see why the studio would want to keep extending this franchise. BeforeJonah Hill’s comments aboutMIB 23in August,James Bobin(The Muppets) was brought on to direct, but we haven’t had any updates on that project quite yet.

Before writing theJump Streetmovies,Rodney Rothmanstarted his career as the youngest staff writer in history onLate Show with David Letterman, at just 21 years of age, and when he became head writer at 24, he was the youngest ever to reach that title. He also wrote for TV shows such asUndeclaredandCommittedbefore moving to features withGrudge Match, starringSylvester StalloneandRobert De Niro, and22 Jump Street. He also wrote the animated filmThe Something, which he is also slated to direct, and which has a stellar voice cast attached includingSeth Rogen,Zach GalifianakisandBill Hader. Hopefully we’ll hear more about the21 Jump Street Female Spinoffsoon.
