Kylo Ren knows Rey’s secret inThe Rise of SkywalkerTV spot. Lucasfilm and Disney are making sure that everybody knows that the movie hits theaters next weekend and have released a ton of new promotional material over the past few weeks to spread the word. Earlier this week,Star Warsfans were treated to a new clip that reportedly takes place at the start of the highly anticipated movie. It’s a dark clip and the latest TV spot follows in that vein, though it’s for a different reason.
“I know who you are,” saysKylo Rento Rey inThe Rise of Skywalkerspot, “I know the rest of your story.” We’ve heard this one before from the villain in 2017’sThe Last Jediwhen he told her that her parents were nobody. Is Kylo Ren telling the truth, or is there more to the story? From the looks of things, there’s a lot more to the story and Emperor Palpatine will more than likely be the one to reveal that information, or at least be tied to it.
The Rise of Skywalkerco-writer Chris Terrio recently talked aboutRey’s lineageand her story inThe Last Jedi. Rian Johnson took the idea of what it means to be a Jedi and threw that away, which angered a lot of fans. It left Terrio and J.J. Abrams with an interesting predicament. Terrio explains.
“That’s a really interesting thing that Rian did. It’s a democratization ofStar Wars, saying that your lineage and your blood doesn’t necessarily determine who you are, and your past doesn’t determine your future. But we took those provocations as ideas that we could grapple with and hopefully expand upon in this film, because I don’t think it’s a dialectic of one or the other, where either you come from nothing or you are born royalty. There’s a lot of ground in between.”
In the end, Chris Terrio hopes that all three movies in the sequel trilogy tell acomplete story about Rey and her past. The co-writer does not give anything away aboutThe Rise of Skywalker, but he attempts to explain what he and J.J. Abrams wanted to accomplish with the third and final movie in the trilogy. He had this to say about where Rey’s past fits into the big picture.
“I’m trying not to reveal any story points here. There’s a Gordian knot in my tongue. I think those are really valid ideas that Rian put forth, but any series of films, especially if you have three, is a conversation - which is, as I said early on when I was talking to J.J., thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. IfForce Awakensasks the question of who is Rey and where did she come from, and thenThe Last Jedianswered it with a negative in a certain way, hopefullyThe Rise of Skywalkerwill take those two ideas and create a third thing.”
There’s a lot of pressure on J.J. Abrams toend the Skywalker Sagaon a high note. The reactions toThe Force AwakensandThe Last Jedihave been divisive, to say the least. CertainStar Warsfans have not been into the collaboration with Disney and don’t like the big screen content that has come along over the years, thoughRogue Oneseems to stick out for nearly everybody. Abrams isn’t going to be able to please everybody and he knows it, so he tried to tie everything up in the most satisfying way he could.
