Guy Ritchie is known for making the slickest comedy actions in Hollywood. While some of his outings are shinier than others, fans of his distinctive style will never be found complaining about more Guy Ritchie flash. And he is about to bring his flamboyance to the small screen with an adaptation of his 2019 comedy action flickThe Gentlemen, which incidentally was initially pitched as a TV series.
Ritchie wrote, produced, directed the film, and developed the story along with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. He is about to reprise his role as director. He will executive produce the series that has been officially greenlit by Netflix after it was revealed in March that they wereeyeing an adaptation. Ritchie has co-written the pilot with Matthew Read and is all set to direct the first two episodes. Ritchie will serve as creator, executive producer, and co-writer along with Read.

In the film Mickey Pearson, an American expat to the UK, is the kingpin of the biggest marijuana crime syndicate in England. Most of his cannabis farms are concealed on the estates of broke British aristocrats, who need the side hustle to upkeep their lavish lifestyles.
The series is supposed to follow Eddie Horniman, the estranged son of a British aristocrat who inherits his father’s estate that is not only part of Mickey Pearson’s empire but also one of his biggest weed farms.
The Gentlemen: The Cast & Crew
The show is expected to feature many Guy Ritchie regulars. English actor Theo James (of films likeDivergentandUnderworld: Awakeningand recent TV shows likeThe Time Traveler’s WifeandThe White Lotusfame) is set to join the series as Eddie Horniman. Thebrilliant Giancarlo Esposito(Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul,The Boys,The Mandalorian, andCommunity) will join Theo James.
Other actors who have been announced are Kaya Scodelario (Skins,Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales); Daniel Ings (Lovesick,Black Mirror); Joely Richardson (101 Dalmatians,The Sandman); Peter Serafinowicz (His Dark Materials, The School for Good and Evil); Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Galavant). The show will see Ritchie and Jones reunite on-screen again after 2000 when they worked onSnatchtogether. Alexis Rodney (Outlander,Guardians of the Galaxy, Dungeons & Dragons) has also recently been added to the main cast.
Even though Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, or Jeremy Strong are not on-board right now, one can hope that the showrunners will sneak in a guest appearance by at least one of the OG cast members in the show.
The Gentlemen: Everything Else
This isn’t Guy Ritchie’s first foray into the world of television. Earlier, he also adapted his breakout hitLock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrelsfor Channel 4. However, he didn’t direct the adaptation. He wrote the episode “…and Four Stolen Hooves” and acted as the executive producer for the series. There was also a series based onSnatch, but Ritchie was not involved with the project.

As perNetflix Tudum, Ritchie revealed:
“The world of The Gentlemen is a little bit of me… I’m thrilled that with Netflix, Miramax and Moonage, we have this opportunity to inhabit it once again. We’re looking forward to bringing fans back into that world, introducing new characters and their stories, and I’m excited to be doing it with this extremely talented cast.”
While announcing the show, Netflix declared:
“Press your double-breasted suit and shine those brogues because it’s time to step back into the world of The Gentlemen. Guy Ritchie’s 2019 film is getting the series treatment, with Theo James leading an eight-episode journey into the messy underground politics of upper-class weed farms.”
Release Date
Production forThe GentlemenTV show has already begun in the UK, November 7 onwards. Reportedly the first season of the show will have eight episodes and is expected to start streaming on Netflix sometime next winter, as filming is supposed to wrap up only around spring 2023.
