Steam FPS Fest is well underway now, facilitating both deals on existing games and demos for cool, upcoming titles. One of these is the heavily retro-inspired FPS: Exophobia, a game that draws its cues from the likes of both DOOM and Metroid. As part of Steam FPS Fest, its developers have put out abrand-new demofor prospective alien blasters to try out, and they’ve announced the game’s official release date: July 23.

Exophobia puts players onboard a crashed human vessel that’s somehow been overrun by all manner of hostile alien creatures. As the last able-bodied man onboard, it’ll be up to them to clear ‘em out and determine how on earth the situation got so bad. As one might expect, it’s going to take a whole lot of shooting to get the job done.

It appears that the Exophobia experience is meant to be a combination of metroidvania-style exploration and the arcade shooting gameplay of DOOM. The ship players will be fighting their way through several floors comprised of different, uniquely hostile environments. Each will apparently offer different hazards and troubles that will challenge players to change up how they use the environment, their weapons and their character’s movement options.

Players will need to make full use of powerful weapons and abilities to push through Exophobia’s challenging combat.

Exophobia is self-described as “unforgiving” when it comes to difficulty, so it’s likely that players will need to quickly learn to make the most of that movement kit too if they’re going to stay alive. Their space soldier appears to be able to zoom around like the classic DOOM guy, but they also slide around and launch stun attacks on their enemies, both of which will likely be useful for buying valuable time in encounters.

Players will be able to imbue their weapon with powerful new abilities by finding hidden upgrade stations too, so perhaps their soldier will be capable of more than a few surprises before long. Those interested can get a taste of the action right now via Exophobia’s demo on Steam. For everyone else, though, Exophobia will be released on July 23 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox Series X/S and Switch.
