Health Canada has issued active licenses for the ECG app on Apple Watch Series 4 following its US debut last December, as well as for the irregular heart rhythm notification feature.

According to Health Canada’s website, two active licenses from Apple are now showing as approved: 102864 for the ECG app and 102866 for the irregular rhythm notification. The ‘device first issue date’ for both features is noted as Thursday, July 21, 2025, an approval date possibly timed to fly under the radar of the Victoria Day long weekend.
The electrodes built into the Digital Crown and the back crystal of the latest Apple Watch Series 4 model let you take an ECG reading whenever you want by just placing a finger on the Digital Crown for 30 seconds. The feature works in tandem with the Health app, where the waveform of your heart’s electrical activity is stored, ready to be shared with your doctor.
The Health app analyzes your ECGs to indicate whether you have the normal sinus rhythm or show signs of atrial fibrillation, which is a serious form of irregular heart rhythm.
In March, thewatchOS 5.2 software enabledsupport for both the ECG app and the irregular heart rhythm notification in Hong Kong and 19 European countries. A few weeks later, the minorwatchOS 5.2.1 update brought supportfor the ECG and irregular heart rhythm notification features to Croatia, Czech Republic, Iceland, Poland and Slovakia.
The ECG app and irregular rhythm notifications require iPhone 5s or later on iOS 12.2+.
