The H.G. Wells story, War of the Worlds, is not only at the peak ofstellar science-fiction, but it’s also fantastic source material for a large-scale, terrifying survival horror game. Luckily, FlipSwitch Games noticed this gap in the market and decided to let gamers experience the Martians’ invasion for themselves.

Described as an “open-world” battle, pitting players against the extinction of mankind, War of the Worlds is currently in its pre-alpha stage, and a lengthy look at gameplay was recently unveiled to the public, showing elements from a survivor and alien’s perspective. Considerable looting and stealth mechanics are also expected to be part of the experience.

War Of The Worlds Will Include An “Exterminator Mode”

Debuted under the game’sYouTubechannel, the nearly 40-minute video provided a fresh look at the title’s cinematic gameplay and a development update for followers of the project. It was noted that War of the Worlds has been in development for three years and a release window has yet to be announced while the game works through its pre-alpha stage.

The footage leaned into the environments on offer, including built-up suburban areas, stretches of forest reaching secluded areas, and a glimpse at the interiors of nearby establishments where you’ll be hiding from the invaders. The footage also confirmed that a first-person perspective would dictate gameplay as a survivor and a range of weapons were on offer to take down the Martians and hostile encounters.

One element took fans of the IP by surprise, which related to the footage’s reveal of “exterminator mode”. The last ten minutes of the showcase presented gameplay from the machine’s perspective in third-person, revealing that players will be able to play as the machined aliens and unleash the death ray on humans to aid mankind’s extinction.

An X user was quick tocomment“WHAAA you’re able to pick sides! That’s dope!” and another onlookerthoughtthis game could become “the nextFive Nights at Freddy’sand introduce a lot of children to War of the Worlds.”

Furthermore, the footage also previewed the environmental destruction that would flavor the map - including natural disasters like tornados - alongside the new “Red Weed” effects, probe, and alien attacks.
