The hilarious vampire hijinks are set to continue for at least one more year on FX. The network has officially renewedWhat We Do in the Shadowsfor a third season. This comes well ahead of the season 2 finale, which signifies the confidence that the decision-makers have in the series. Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX, had this to say about the renewal in a statement.

“We’re incredibly happy that critics and audiences are all in on Shadows. Week in and week out, the producers, writers and our amazing cast continue to make one of thefunniest and best comedy series on TV.”

What We Do in the Shadowsis based on the movie of the same name. Directed by Taika Waititi, it was released in 2015 to widespread critical acclaim. It made a relatively minimal impact at the box office but, over the years, has started to achieve cult status. The show has proved to be rather popular, withviewership increasing in the second season. Including streaming, live views and all other platforms, FX says each episode is averaging 3.2 million viewers. That represents a 25 percent increase when compared to season 1.

The show, thus far, has been widely praised by the critical community. Season 1 currently holds a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with season 2 boasting an unblemished 100 percent. With that, it’s not too surprising that the network opted to hand out an early renewal. For now, there is no word on when it is expected to premiere, but some time in 2021 seems possible. Much of that could depend on what happens with TV productions in the coming months as the industry tries to forge a path forward following the ongoing shutdown.

What We Do in the Shadowstakes place in the same universe as the movie but follows a different group of vampires, shifting the action from New Zealand to America. The show documents thenightly exploits of vampire roommatesNandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) as they make their way through modern life in Staten Island, New York, along with the help of their human familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillen).

Jemaine Clement, who starred in and co-wrote the movie, created the series. Clement, Taika Waititi and Paul Simms serve as executive producers alongside Scott Rudin, Garrett Basch, Eli Bush and Stefani Robinson. Guest stars this season have included Haley Joel Osment and Mark Hamill.
